How do I become a Shield Classic player?
To play on a Shield competitive division team (Classic, Challenge, and Select,) a player must attend player evaluations. Tryouts are held in May.
What if I am not selected for a Classic position?
You may still be eligible for a position on a Shield competitive team. After evaluations are complete, Classic positions are awarded first, followed by Challenge and Select.
What if miss some/all of the tryouts but I still want to play?
This question has a different answer depending upon where in the season we are and the circumstances.
When and where are practices?
Shield trains on the main, lighted field at UNCA.
Days and times are determined by the coaches and their availability.
Competitive teams train twice per week, with optional strength and tactical trainings scheduled during the season.
When and where are games?
Games take place on weekends.
Locations are variable. The NCYSA division Shield has historically played in includes teams located in Asheville, Boone, Hickory, Kannapolis, Lenoir, Lowell, Matthews, Shelby, and Sylva.
How much travel is involved?
Approximately half of the season’s games are played at home. The rest are played on away fields in any of the above locations.
Tournaments can be further away and are decided upon by parents and the board of directors.
How much are player fees?
Classic fees are:
$250 non-refundable deposit
Required to secure a player’s position upon his/her acceptance. Your deposit will apply to the $700 player fee.
$700 ASFC club fee per player/per season.
After $250 deposit, $450 in club fees remain.
Installment plan available.
$165 uniform kit per player.

When does the season begin and end?
There is a fall season and a spring season.
Fall league training runs from August through November. The season opening tournament is generally Labor Day weekend.
Spring league training runs from January thru May. The season opening tournament is in late January.
