How does one reset gangpank's auto-attack animation with q

So I've been trying to use 's to reset my auto-attack and basically get a third free attack but all I've been getting is auto,q,delay,auto.

Is there some kind of trick to it? The league wiki claims it's possible but I haven't been able to pull it off once.

The auto-attack reset means using auto-attack (ability) auto-attack. Nothing else to it really so I believe you're doing it correctly. I think the wiki counts as auto-attack and the wiki means using auto-attack and then immediatly after.

It basically just means you can use right after auto-attacking. It doesn't reduce the auto-attack time of your next auto-attack though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this wording makes it sound like it allows Gangplank to attack again without the delay from his previous auto

Joxuu is correct. Just like with ' W, 's W, 's , or 's E. This is similar to the way that 's active can be used immediately after a basic attack > basic attack reset ability to do a mini-three hit combo.
